When given the option to choose a topic to write about each week, I knew I wanted to incorporate something that would involve art. It has always been the one thing that I have shown a consistent interest in over the past years.
'Distinguishing Art” seemed a fitting title. It would allow me to speak freely of the pieces of art that I have personally discovered and shown an interest in. I have been fortunate enough to have discovered a small but varied range of artworks and own a small collection of books and photos from various art events that I will be able to incorporate into the blog.
Art has been a strongly shown interest in me since an early age. I have explored many Archibald Prize exhibitions and in recent years I have started to annually attend Sculptures by the Sea. Like many things, art is something that interests people in different ways. What some find fascinating others will ridicule and vice versa. Through my weekly blog entries I will discuss pieces of art that have struck an interest in me, personally. I will write about specific pieces of art that I feel have ‘distinguishing’ aspects and make them stand out from the others. These particular pieces of art have intrigued me in some way. Many artists discussed have kept me going back to certain exhibitions time and time again.
William Congreve wrote that music can "soothe the savage breast" (1967). This is how I feel in regards to art. It illuminates and delights me in ways that nothing else does. A sense of calmness and serenity overcomes me when I am in and around art.
Discovering life imitating art and art imitating life I am always in awe of how artists are able to reflect their thoughts and imagination onto paper, canvas, through sculptures and through many other mediums.
There will always be a place in my life for Art. It will be something that I will continue to discover by myself, with my children and hopefully my children’s children.
If you hadn't had a love for the arts before, then I hope you will have after reading through Distinguishing Art and that it just may entice you enough to venture out and see some exhibitions first hand.
